Cartersville Medical Center Employees, Volunteer Receive Company's Highest Awards

Cartersville, GA; May 22, 2018: The 2017 Frist Humanitarian and HCA Excellence in Nursing Award winners were announced recently at Cartersville Medical Center.  Created in 1971, the Frist Humanitarian Award honors outstanding individuals for their humanitarian and volunteer activities.  The Excellence in Nursing Award celebrates the extraordinary clinical and compassionate care delivered by HCA nurses every day. Phoebe Stieber, employee, Sarah Huber, volunteer, Donielle Sullivan, registered nurse and Stephanie Newby, registered nurse, took home the company’s top honors.

Named in honor of Dr. Thomas F. Frist, Sr. (1910-1998), a founder of HCA (parent company of Cartersville Medical Center), the Frist Humanitarian Award recognizes individuals who serve the community and those in need and whose daily dedication and care giving epitomize the highest standards of quality and personal commitment.

Employee Recipient – Frist Humanitarian Award
The employee award recognizes a HCA-affiliated employee who goes beyond day-to-day responsibilities in his/her overall service to the community.  A 12 year employee of Cartersville Medical Center, Phoebe Stieber was named the employee recipient of the Frist Humanitarian Award.  Currently the associate administrator and ethics and compliance officer, Stieber’s roles at CMC have also included director of occupational health and medicine and vice president of quality resources.

Known for being exceptionally giving to staff, visitors and patients, Stieber regularly delivers meals to the Good Neighbor Homeless Shelter where she also provides personal meal donations.  She serves on the board of the Bartow College and Career Academy and the Etowah Education Foundation, and is a member of the Etowah Rotary Club and Cartersville-Bartow County Chamber of Commerce.

Currently, Stieber is pursuing a master’s degree in healthcare administration; in her spare time, she enjoys antique shopping and reading. 

The daughter of Doyle and Ivanette Watters, Stieber lives in Kingston with her husband, Jeff.  

Volunteer Recipient – Frist Humanitarian Award
A volunteer at Cartersville Medical Center for over eight years, Sarah Huber was named the volunteer recipient of the Frist Humanitarian Award. Huber has logged more than 3,000 volunteer hours at Cartersville Medical Center and currently serves in the outpatient procedures unit.  

Described as extremely kind, caring and dedicated to serving patients and visitors at CMC, Huber is an active member of Pine Grove Baptist Church and serves as a mentor for elementary school students in the community.  Huber also volunteers at Cartersville Heights Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, where she provides birthday gifts for residents and makes floral arrangements and wreaths for the facility.

In her free time, Huber makes blankets for hospice patients and hats for newborn babies.  She especially enjoys spending time with her two daughters, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

HCA Excellence in Nursing Award Recipients
The recipients of the 2017 HCA Excellence in Nursing Award are Donielle Sullivan, RN and Stephanie Newby, RN.

A nurse at Cartersville Medical Center since July, 2015, Sullivan is currently a nurse on the PACU unit, and has also worked on the Medical/Surgical unit.  A banker for ten years, Sullivan chose to become a nurse after witnessing a devastating tornado in Adairsville in 2012 and assisting with injury triage.

While Sullivan is described by her colleagues as kind-hearted, a true friend and a sweet soul, her patients state she is compassionate, caring and “the best nurse ever”.

Sullivan lives in Calhoun with her husband, Adam and three children. 

Newby, a nurse on the Progressive Care Unit, is described as professional, passionate about nursing, loving, hardworking, funny, a patient advocate and a great leader. She has been recognized by her peers for her willingness to help, availability, knowledge, respect and professionalism.  She has worked at Cartersville Medical Center for four years.

Newby is an advocate for families in need and is a loyal supporter of the March of Dimes.

Newby lives in Acworth with her husband, Billy, and two children.
