Br’er Rabbit Tales…Folk Stories or Survival Manuals

Cartersville, GA – Bartow History Museum staff member, Elise Petersen, will present her research on Br’er Rabbit folk stories as recorded by Georgia native Joel Chandler Harris, February 17, at noon. While the Br’er Rabbit tales have been remembered over the years for their entertainment value, due in part to Disney’s animated film, The Song of the South, which debuted in 1946, many may not realize their covert purpose as instruction manuals for surviving enslavement in the American South. Join us as we explore this story together.
Elise Petersen joined the Bartow History Museum in September of 2015 as part of the educational staff. She has a BA in History from Brigham Young University, with an emphasis on nineteenth-century America.
