    Job Description
    JOB TITLE: Laboratory Analyst
     
    PAY RATE: Based on Experience and Certification
     
    DEPARTMENT: Water Department, City of Cartersville
     
    JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for performing laboratory analyses of water and wastewater samples, managing all QA/QC aspects of the laboratory, data entry, and safety. This position enforces City of Cartersville facility and agency regulations and policies.
     
    MAJOR DUTIES:  
    • Analyzes water and wastewater samples when needed. 
    • Maintains the laboratory QA/QC program.
    • Prepares sample analysis reports, logs results of all samples tested into Excel spreadsheets and the State’s ESE program.
    • Analyzes industrial wastewater samples and reports results as needed.
    • Manages the laboratory safety program.
    • Conducts tests of routine, complaint, and customer requested water samples.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.
     
    KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
    • Knowledge of standard laboratory principles, techniques, terminology, equipment and materials.
    • Knowledge of mathematics.
    • Knowledge of basic chemistry and biology.
    • Knowledge of water and wastewater treatment processes.
    • Skill in performing standard mathematical calculations such as ratios, unit conversions, and percentages. 
    • Computer skills & experience with Excel, Word, PowerPoint and the State’s ESE program.
    • Experience in operating lab equipment.
    • Skill in public relations.
    • The ability to obtain a GA wastewater lab analyst license.
    • The ability to obtain a GA water lab analyst license.
    • Valid Georgia driver’s license.
    • HS Diploma.
    • College Degree or related experience.
    • Skill in oral and written communication.
     
    SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Laboratory Director or Laboratory Manager assigns work in terms of general instructions.  The work is reviewed in progress or upon completion for accuracy and the nature and propriety of the final results.
     
    GUIDELINES: Guidelines include supervisory instructions, United States Environmental Protection Agency approved methods and regulations, Georgia EPD guidelines, and accepted practices and procedures.  These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
     
    COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related duties in laboratory analysis, QA/QC, safety, and data entry.
     
    SCOPE AND EFFECT:   The purpose of this position is to analyze water and wastewater samples to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local standards.  Successful performance helps ensure a safe water supply. Manage the laboratory’s QA/QC Program as required by the EPD to ensure precision and accuracy are always maintained. Manage and maintain the laboratory safety program to ensure safety in all areas and aspects of the City of Cartersville Water Department Laboratory.
     
    PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, industry representatives and regulators, federal and state agency representatives, and the general public.
     
    PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give and exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
     
    PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, stooping and walking. Employees may be required to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Clear hearing and speech are required.
     
    WORK ENVIRONMENT:   The work is performed in a laboratory and outdoors, where the employee may be exposed to machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and occasional inclement weather.  The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, and gloves.
