JOB TITLE: FiberCom IT Technician
DEPARTMENT: FiberCom, City of Cartersville
JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for supporting and maintaining the integrity of the city’s information technology systems, including network infrastructure, computers, mobile devices, and core services. The role also provides technical assistance for the City’s Fiber Optic Network and ensures that all assigned systems remain patched, updated, and secure.
MAJOR DUTIES:
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
QUALIFICATIONS:
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The FiberCom Director provides general instructions and assigns work. Completed tasks are reviewed for compliance with procedures and the appropriateness of results.
GUIDELINES: Work is performed in accordance with city ordinances, policies, procedures, wiring codes, and applicable state and federal regulations. Judgment and interpretation are often required when applying these guidelines.
COMPLEXITY: The role involves a variety of technical and administrative duties. Frequent multitasking and handling of multiple priorities contribute to job complexity.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: This position ensures effective support for IT systems across all City of Cartersville departments. Successful performance directly enhances technology reliability, communication efficiency, and operational continuity throughout the city.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts include city staff, vendors, service providers, engineers, network consultants, co-workers, and the public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: To exchange information, provide services, resolve problems, coordinate activities, and support departmental operations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work may involve sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee may lift both light and heavy objects and must be able to distinguish color variations for cable and component identification.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is primarily performed indoors in an office environment but may require outdoor work under varying conditions. Some tasks may require working at heights above 8 feet.

- Maintain and support computers and devices for all City departments, including desktops, laptops, tablets, and voice communication equipment.
- Install, maintain, and troubleshoot computer hardware, software, and peripherals.
- Ensure all managed systems remain properly patched, updated, and secured through routine maintenance and monitoring.
- Support and maintain electronic facility access control systems, including user management, configuration of access levels/time zones, and troubleshooting system inputs/outputs.
- Assist with the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of security surveillance systems, including the retrieval and handling of sensitive video/audio footage.
- Assist FiberCom personnel with phones, cellular devices, radios, networking equipment, multimedia systems, and other related technical tasks.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
- Knowledge of Windows, Android, and iOS operating systems; Microsoft Office 365.
- Knowledge of computer network administration and network infrastructure components.
- Knowledge of communication software tools, monitoring systems, and diagnostic utilities.
- Ability to learn new technologies, follow established procedures, and adapt to evolving needs.
- Skill in prioritizing tasks, organizing work, and independently troubleshooting complex issues.
- Skill in using electronic test equipment, network diagnostic tools, and related instruments.
- Knowledge and practical skills involving wireless networks and mobile technologies.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education and competency levels that are commonly associated with specialized training in IT or a related field, in addition to high school completion.
- Sufficient hands-on experience to understand the principles of the major duties, typically gained through an internship, apprenticeship, or 1–2 years in a similar role.
